Rewards & Sanctions
At St John Fisher, we value the importance of rewarding good behaviour, effort, and progress. By recognizing and celebrating positive contributions, we foster a culture of respect and encourage students to strive for excellence. Our approach emphasizes both formal and informal praise, ensuring that all students feel appreciated for their efforts.
However, we are equally committed to addressing poor behaviour. Disruptive actions are not tolerated, and appropriate sanctions are issued when students fail to follow school rules. We encourage students to take responsibility for their actions, understand the consequences, and make amends. Our goal is to maintain a fair and supportive environment where positive behaviour is the standard.
At St John Fisher, we believe in the importance of rewarding good behavior, effort, and achievement, as these are key to motivating students and reinforcing positive values. We are dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the contributions of our students, helping them understand that their hard work and good behavior are valued within our school community. By consistently acknowledging positive actions, we aim to create an environment where students feel supported and are inspired to achieve their best in all areas of school life.
Our reward system relies on both formal and informal praise, which plays a vital role in encouraging outstanding behavior. We make it a priority to recognize individual students and groups for their positive impact, whether it’s through their behavior, contributions to school activities, or service to others. All staff members take an active role in this, ensuring that students are acknowledged at every opportunity for their achievements.

Sanctions
We believe every student in our school community has the right to learn, and disruptive or poor behaviour is not tolerated. It is always addressed with appropriate sanctions, and students are encouraged to understand that their actions have consequences. We focus on helping students make responsible choices, take ownership of their actions, and make amends when they behave inappropriately. The Education and Inspections Act 2006 grants teachers and school staff the authority to discipline students for breaches of school rules, failure to follow instructions, or other unacceptable behaviour, provided the sanctions are fair and proportionate. At St John Fisher, this power extends to Pastoral Coordinators, Learning Support Assistants, and Cover Supervisors. Section 91 of the Act states that sanctions must take into account the age, any special educational needs or disabilities, and religious requirements of the student, ensuring they are reasonable and appropriate in each case. Staff are trusted to use their professional judgement in addressing inappropriate behaviour, applying sanctions that are designed to correct the issue and promote better behaviour, without embarrassing or humiliating the student. It is important that students perceive the sanction as fair and just. We also recognize that ongoing disruptive behaviour may indicate unmet educational or other needs. In such cases, the school will consider whether a multi-agency assessment is necessary. The list of sanctions provided below serves as a broad guide, but actions may vary depending on individual circumstances, including the student’s age, special needs, or religious requirements.

Teaching staff members at St John Fisher Catholic High School utilise a ‘consequences’ system (flowchart below) within lessons. The aim of the consequence system is to eliminate low-level disruptive behaviours that impact negatively on high quality teaching and learning. The whole school consequence system ensures that there is a fairness and consistency across all teachers within the school community.
Acts of clear defiance from students towards staff members are taken very seriously by St John Fisher Catholic High School. Whilst negative behaviour, which acts as low-level disruption within the classroom is dealt with via the consequences system, acts of defiance which clearly challenge the safe and efficient running of the school will be dealt with via the most serious sanctions. Any incident of defiance towards staff members will always result in the student being placed in the Remove room. Depending on the severity of the defiance, a placement suspension or even fixed term suspension may be used.
