Intervention

SJF logo WHITE

At St John Fisher, we recognize that every student’s learning journey is unique, and sometimes additional support is necessary to help them thrive. Intervention may be needed for various reasons, including physical challenges such as hearing or vision difficulties, as well as issues with speech and language, learning, or behaviour. To ensure every student reaches their potential, we provide specialist programmes aimed at developing specific skills, along with extra classroom support when needed. We offer a wide range of intervention programmes to address different needs including Social skills development, Anger management, Literacy and numeracy support, Oracy (speaking, listening, and language processing), Writing skills enhancement (e.g. analytical writing, evaluation), Emotional support for Young Carers or those experiencing bereavement. In addition, we have programmes to challenge our most able students, helping them reach their full academic potential. These interventions take place during the school day, at lunchtimes, or after school hours, based on the needs of each student.

Peer Mentoring

Peer mentoring is a key part of our intervention strategy. Trained Year 10 students mentor younger pupils during lunchtimes or at scheduled times, offering advice on self-organisation, academic work, and friendship difficulties. These peer mentors are also trained to refer more serious issues to staff members when necessary.

Who Receives Intervention?

Interventions are available for students of all abilities. Our primary aim is to remove any barriers to learning or well-being, ensuring every child can progress confidently. In addition to supporting students with SEN (Special Educational Needs) and EAL (English as an Additional Language), we place special emphasis on monitoring and supporting students in receipt of Pupil Premium, as they may be at higher risk of underperforming. Each term, all students are carefully monitored following the distribution of reports. If concerns arise around a student’s learning, attitude, or performance, they will be placed on a monitoring report and given guidance on how to improve. We also work closely with parents and carers, providing information and advice to help them support their children’s education.
